This is the award I most value. I remain honored, thirty-one years later, to have received it.

The Boston Herald was recently awarded the Dennis Kauff Award for Excellence in Public Communications from the Massachusetts chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

"We gave the award to the Herald because of the many editorials it's written on drunk-driving legislation," said Patricia Latino, the state executive director of MADD. "They've shown a tremendous amount of support for our organization and our cause."

Latino and MADD state Chairman George Ferro, presented a plaque to Herald columnist Beverly Beckham because of her many editorials in favor of stronger state legislation against drunken drivers.

"Beverly has written so many articles about the victims of drunk driving, showing the personal side to the tragedies that occur when a drunk driver gets behind the wheel," Latino said.

The award is given annually in memory of Dennis Kauff, a television reporter who was killed by a drunken driver several years ago.
